What is it like to have a baby with a disability?
To be honest I don't view it any differently to having a baby without a
disability. In a way it's better as she has been a 'baby' longer!
There is so much love as you are handed your baby and gaze into each
others eyes- she is YOUR baby, she grew inside YOU, was part of YOU
for those 9 months that you don't see her as a baby with a disability she's
just YOUR baby.
As the time goes by you realise that maybe she can't do some things,
and maybe she is behind according to the 'normal' development charts.
But there is so much she CAN do- and thats what you focus on and really
appreciate- the small things. The little things bring a tear to your eye as
she finally does something you were told she wouldn't or you had given
up seeing her do like stretching her leg out with a big smile on her face,
as you shed a tear it also gives you hope for her future.
Giving her all the opportunities you can for her development - you will no
doubt see her achieve much more. Let her show you what she can do and focus
on that instead of looking at what she can't do.
The main lesson I have learnt through my short experience is simply:
